History of Mission San Juan Capistrano

Founded on November 1, 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano was the seventh of California’s 21 missions. It became a center for agriculture, education, religion and community life.

The Mission’s history includes the Acjachemen people, Spanish missionaries, Mexican California and later generations who helped shape the region. Today, visitors can explore exhibits that present these different chapters of California history. Official Mission history

Tours

Complimentary audio tours are included with admission and are available in several languages. Visitors may explore at their own pace while learning about the Mission’s history, gardens and architecture.

Arriving by Train

The San Juan Capistrano train station is located at:

The station is approximately two blocks from the Mission and is served by Amtrak and Metrolink.

Accessibility

Family Visits

The Return of the Swallows

The Mission is famous for the tradition of the swallows returning to Capistrano. The annual celebration takes place around March 19 and may include historic bell ringing, music and community presentations. Swallows celebration
